How Long Does Godaddy Domain Transfer Take
Transferring My Domain Registration Away From GoDaddy
Before attempting to transfer a domain away from GoDaddy, you must complete the following steps.
Important
- After purchasing a domain, you must wait 60 days before you can transfer it to a new host. This is not a HostGator-specific rule but rather a rule implemented by ICANN, the organization that governs domain registrations. For more information, please review ICANN's Policy on Transfer of Registrations between Registrars.
- Wait for 24-48 hours after unlocking the domain to make sure it takes effect in WHOIS.
Step 1: Update Contact Information for Domain
The contact information for your domain needs to be up-to-date so that the EPP code/Authorization Code can be emailed to you. To update your contact information:
Note: Changing the Organization name for the registrant contact or the First name and Last name for the registrant contact if an organization isn't the legal registrant for the domain name will mean that you cannot transfer the domain for a 60-day period.
- Log in to your GoDaddy account.
- Under Domains, click Manage of the domain name you wish to transfer.
- Navigate to Contact Information, then click Edit.
- Review and/or update the contact information for accuracy.
- If the contact details for the different account types are different, uncheck the Use for all contact types, then review section type for any errors.
- Click Save when your changes are complete.
Step 2: Remove Privacy Protection from the Domain
The domain transfer will automatically fail if the privacy protection is enabled on the domain name when the transfer request is initiated. All WHOIS information must be publicly visible for the transfer to go through successfully.
Privacy protection can be removed by clicking Remove privacy at the bottom of the Contact Information section, then confirming that privacy should be removed from the domain.
Step 3: Unlock the Domain
If the domain name is locked, the transfer request will automatically fail as the domain must be unlocked prior to initiating the transfer.
To unlock the domain:
- Log in to your GoDaddy account.
- Under Domains, click Manage of the domain name you wish to transfer.
- Scroll down to Additional Settings, then click Edit next to Domain lock.
- Set the toggle off. It will take a few moments for the update to show.
Step 4: Request EPP Code/Authorization Code
Most domain registrars require an EPP code/authorization code in order to transfer a domain name. This provides an extra layer of security and protects the domain against unauthorized transfers.
To request an EPP code/authorization code:
- Log in to your GoDaddy account.
- Under Domains, click Manage of the domain name you wish to transfer.
- Scroll down to Additional Settings, then click Edit next to Domain lock.
- Navigate to the bottom, then click on Get authorization code.
- The authorization code will then be sent to the domain's administrator email address on file.
Step 5: Submit Domain Name Transfer Request to HostGator
Once all of the above steps have been completed, you should be ready to transfer your domain name to HostGator.
- Go to the HostGator domain transfer form at https://www.hostgator.com/domain-transfer.
- Enter your domain in the Transfer Field.
If your domain name extension (TLD) ends in something other than .biz, .club, .co, .com, .host, .info, .me, .net, .online, .org, .site, .space, .store, .tech, .us. or .website, you will not be able to use the transfer form to process your request. You will need to contact HostGator's Support via phone or Live Chat with your domain name and authorization code so we can arrange the payment.
Please refer to the following article for a list of domains that can be transferred to HostGator along with their respective fees:
- Which Domain Name Registrations Can I Transfer to HostGator?
- Review the steps on the page to ensure the domain name is unlocked and privacy protection is disabled.
- Click Continue To Checkout.
- Create a new account or opt to log in to an existing HostGator account.
- Fill out or verify the Payment Options and click Continue to Checkout once again.
- OnYour Order Summary page, do the following:
- Select how many years to renew the domain and if you would like to add privacy protection.
- If you already have your EPP code/ Authorization code available, you can enter it in the Enter Authorization Code field.
- Put a checkmark in the box ofTerms of Service and Domain Registration Policy.
- Click Place Your Order.
If you cannot pay with a credit card or PayPal account, this step will not work for you. Instead, please contact us via phone or Live Chat with your domain name and authorization code so we can arrange payment.
Step 6: Approve the Transfer of the Domain Name to HostGator
After a few hours, you should receive an email from GoDaddy confirming your domain transfer request was received. This is a typical security measure. You will need to approve the transfer in your GoDaddy control panel; otherwise, your transfer may take up to 7 days to complete.
- Log in to your GoDaddy account.
- At the top of the page, hover over the Hi, Customer (your name) dropdown menu, and click Visit My Account.
- Next to Domains, click Launch.
- From the top, green menu bar, clickDomains >>Transfers.
- Select the checkbox next to your transferred domain, and click the Accept/Decline button in the top toolbar.
- Choose Accept and clickOK.
You will receive an email from HostGator once the transfer is complete. If you have not heard from HostGator after seven (7) days, you may contact us to inquire about your transfer status.
