Upgrading from a Canon 60D. Where to adjacent?
Hello,
I'd like to upgrade from my Canon 60D. I'grand generally happy with the body, simply see challenges with ISO racket and low light indoor settings. I like to shoot family occasions (holiday gatherings, birthdays, etc) and lifestyle shots in the abode, and this is where I hit the depression light challenges. Otherwise, I like to shoot family vacations and hiking trips, and my outdoor results are great unless it's past dusk.
I'm looking for Canon recommendations for a body upgrade, and I'm open to ingather body or total frame.
Hither's what I have currently:
Catechism 60D body
Canon EF 35mm f/two IS USM
Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM
Catechism EF 50mm f/1.eight
Catechism EFS 18-135mm f/three.v-v.6 IS
Canon Speedlite 430EX II (I don't love using flash, FYI)
Based on this data and the gear currently in the bag, what Canon body would y'all recommend? If a crop body is the route, I'll buy a Sigma eighteen-135. If full frame, I'll purchase a Canon 24-70L zoom. My thoughts to this point are 80D, 6D MkII, or 5D MkIII. I love a good Canon refurb bargain, and the the 5K MkIII is the top terminate of the budget range.
Thanks!

Thank you. I could do that. I've assumed up to this signal that I'd continue the EFS zoom if I went with a crop torso. By "Sigma 18-135," I meant Sigma 18-35 one.8 Art lens to assistance with the indoor low light challenges.

I've had both the 18-135 STM and the newer USM.
From what I've read, they're both way ameliorate than the original xviii-135 IS. I'd sell it.
The USM was released at the same time every bit the 80D, they seem to be a great friction match for each other - I love mine. The USM did focus faster than the STM for me.
The Sigma interested me as well for information technology's 1.8, simply I've read of some questionable things nigh it, at least with canon crop bodies. You'd accept to research this for yourself, or perhaps someone who has some direct experience with this can comment.
I tin't recall the details of my inquiry on the Sigma lens, but the overall impression, which was to beware.

Adept to know on the 18-135. Thank you lot. Now only working through the thought procedure of ingather or total frame considering that 75% of my lenses are already EF lenses. Current full frame options would assistance eliminate my ISO/indoor challenge. Though if I don't need to spend the money, I'yard fine with a crop.

If you do video at all then the 80D may be the mode to get equally the dpaf is really slick for that.
For indoor family shots I notice I use flash a lot with my 80D. I needed video so I went 80D instead of 6D. If I didn't need video I would take gone 6D.
I rented the sigma 18-35. It's a big heavy lens and there are lots of reports with focusing issues on the 80D. The one I got seemed ok just for indoor people shots I found I had it at 35mm most of the fourth dimension every bit anything wider caused some distortion. IQ was very nice from it....

For indoors, higher Iso'southward and less noise I think it'due south a expert style to become. It has some limitations as well so read up on the focusing system and fps to see if it will exercise what.you demand.

If lower light is an issue, I would advise the 6D ii. I accept simply got one and the noise at ISO6400 is comparable to noise at ISO1600 on either 70D or M5 (M5 has same sensor as 80D).
I call back information technology would be a significant upgrade from your 60D in every respect except reach (due to FF vs crop), simply that shouldn't exist an issue since you lot don't have whatever long lenses. It is sort-of a FF 80D with regard to features etc. Many will say that the much spoken about DR is worse than 80D, merely in my experience, not appreciably (if at all) in real world apply.
On lenses, carry in listen that a 24-seventy on FF is equivalent to only 44mm at long finish on ingather, so it is shorter (by a pregnant margin than your current 18-135mm.
I have a 24-105L and am already finding it "short" on the 6D ii compared to my 70D. I think that the 24-70L would be too short for my needs, simply plain everyone's needs vary.
If you are in United states, there has been some great sales lately on 6D ii bundles.

Good thoughts, Andy, on the accomplish of the lenses if going FF. Since my primes are between 35-85, maybe the 70-200 would exist a meliorate first footstep than 24-lxx if I go FF.
In researching the 6D MkII, the one affair I don't love is the clustered AF points in the viewfinder. It seems that would impact composition too much, but I approximate one could become used to it.

Is the AF points spread any worse than the (probably) nine points on your 60D ?
Also call up, that in LiveView the AF points apparently cover a large part of the screen.

I have the 60d and have constitute no reason to upgrade. Nonetheless. Information technology does what I want information technology to and it is paid for for.
I also have the 430 flash and information technology is the best accesorory I have gotten for the 60d. It makes indoor work then much easier.
Perhaps the OP should get to know the 430 more than and they will not need to search for another camera and higher iso . I haven't.

May not be the answer yous want to hear, but regardless of the photographic camera you lot get my advice is to spend some time really learning how to use your excellent flash if you desire to improve your indoor shots. The pull a fast one on is to get beyond just pointing it direct at your field of study, and written report upwardly on bounciness flash and supplementing the ambient lite. It's not hard to larn, and will brand your indoor (and outdoor) photos much better and they won't look like "ugly flash shots". You can often get by with lower ISO values also, improving your picture show IQ.
Yep, a improve camera has adept high ISO, but that never replaces having control of your lighting. There is no replacement for "good calorie-free" quality, and no amount of high ISO volition make upwards for that. When properly used a skilful flash photo doesn't look similar a "flash photo", but can often expect then much better than just the available indoor light.
Allow's face up it, nigh indoor available light does not flatter subjects. It's ofttimes direct overhead, causes raccoon eyes, and is a funky color mix. It's never coming from the platonic direction to make people look expert. Or your groundwork is too bright / as well dark when you betrayal for the subject. Or the harsh sunlight outdoors causes bad shadows. Lighting is everything to proficient portrait shots! Flash can solve nearly all of that, and pushing shadows in Photoshop is non the same result, especially when the shadows are in the incorrect places.
I'thousand not proverb natural light is non a good matter. I prefer natural calorie-free when it'due south good natural light, such equally an overcast 24-hour interval or a soft northern window calorie-free However, rarely is artificial indoor light great for making people look their best on photographic camera.
Plus if yous purchase an inexpensive radio trigger you can start experimenting with off camera lighting, which is a whole new (and exciting) globe to explore.
I accept a 6D which is very adept in low light, but a flashgun is Ever in my camera bag and gets used regularly.
Some flash photos.

Merely do you need DR? 6D2 has less than the lxxx D so lightening low ISO shadows is poor on the 6D2
Though if I don't demand to spend the coin, I'm fine with a crop.

Re: Upgrading from a Canon 60D. Where to next?
Thanks for the input and the images. Fun stuff. This is the kind of family stuff I finish up shooting a lot of the time. I tin can work the flash just fine and get adept results with information technology. I use bounce techniques with a little diffuser. Sometimes flash is merely necessary with gross indoor lighting, but I'd like to limit the use. I also like to travel lite. I enjoy the creative procedure without lugging a huge flash around.
As for the dynamic range inquiry and the 6DMkII vs 80D commentary, I don't need to shoot at 100 ISO then I don't know that I intendance also much. I do, however, apply Lightroom and if the camera can capture solid dynamic range, I similar being able to adjust shadows and highlights when necessary.
The other affair that really intrigues me with the newer technology is wifi/bluetooth. I love the thought of capturing bully images and so sending them to my telephone on the spot for sharing via Instagram/FB.

I hold most the wink/natural light comments for people pics. A good reference and experimenting is the best learning procedure. I usually try to utilize manual settings on the camera and some combination of bounciness and diffuser on the flash. I don't take many indoor people pics so I often demand to experiment a bit earlier shooting to be certain I like the results.

I become information technology. The flash tin be a pain to lug around and it certainly adds bulk to the photographic camera. But using flash is artistic, and so in that aspect yous're being moreartistic than only pointing a photographic camera.
I've tried going wink-less before and never end upward happy with the results. Aye. I typically shoot in manual mode with flash. I gear up the camera upward and then the exposure for ambience light is around -1 to -one.v stops, so let the wink do the rest of the work. My starting point is frequently effectually 1/fourscore, f4, ISO 1600 and I'll suit from at that place equally needed. This gives skilful results and captures enough ambience low-cal where the surround don't look also nighttime.
My main accessories are a CTO gel to lucifer the wink colour to incandecent calorie-free, and a homemade bounciness card attached with velcro to throw some light forward when bouncing off the ceiling. I think it'south bully that my new flashes come up with the CTO cover as an accessory.

Cheers to all. Good input all around. You've helped me decide to stay with the 60D. I'g just going to milk the life out of this affair. It's a solid tool; I'll only let whatever challenges guide my creativity.
BUT... I withal desire to mix things up. So, I found a used Fujifilm X-E2s with kit lens for inexpensive at B&H. Should be a nice introduction to Fuji and mirrorless, and allows me to travel light when needed.
Thanks again.

Purchasing a new camera can certainly make your head spin! TBH I remember a sideways move won't net you much comeback where information technology really matters. For your needs that 6D2 will really stone (your jaw will simply driblet when you see your first ISO 1600 pics).
Add a 24-105 zoom for your kit (and perhaps that lxx-200 for outdoors) and yous're all set. Plus swap for the new 50 STM (you'll honey the improved response).
I thing that you tin do to meliorate all of your indoor shots is to upgrade your lighting if you oasis't already. Supplant all of your bulbs with (big) 5000K LEDs or CFLs. They'll now match the color of your wink, as well as any daylight coming through the windows. No more awful color mis-matches. Hint: I've also done this at both my folks' and my in-laws' houses.
It sounds like we prefer to shoot in much the aforementioned manner, preferring available light and calculation discrete flash when we have to. If you lot exercise use flash for an indoor event (like birthdays, souvenir-opening, etc), I'd recommend getting a set of radios and setting the flash on a stand pointing up into a corner. The light will exist much more natural looking and a lot less annoying than on-camera flash.
Well I hope this helps. Adept luck with your determination (to buy the 6D2 )!!!
